As Goes California

As a former Californian, born and raised, I can attest to the fact that although the sun may set in the West, many things rise up from there as well. According to the old adage, ”As goes California, so goes the rest of the nation” – and often the world – in terms of codes and culture. Hollywood, for example, sets the global standard for fashion and pop culture.

In our industry, California is known for setting the strictest codes governing, for example, chemicals, air quality management, and now, mandating that all new homes be net-zero energy by 2020. Once a law passes in California, it is only a matter of time before it is adopted in the rest of the states.

In this issue’s cover story, ”Ed Begley Jr. and SPF LEED the Hollywood Green Revolution” (page 50), the Golden State’s codes and celebrity combine. Self-described ”Actor, Activist,” Ed Begley Jr. has always been an outspoken proponent of environmental causes. In a town known for appearance over substance, Begley has never veered from his commitment to conservation – recycling decades before it was mandatory, xeriscaping his yard, long before California’s drought made water-rationing imperative, even famously biking to the Academy Awards. Thus, when family demands called for a new home, Begley’s unwavering commitment to championing ”Green” causes continued and he decided his home would meet the strictest environmental standards – LEED Platinum.

Spray polyurethane foam played a large role in this green project.

As an ”Environmentally Preferable Product,” the SPF used in the project meets California’s strict environmental regulations, including those governing emissions and VOCs.

Further, the green product not only helped Begley meet LEED Platinum building envelope standards, but also helped in terms of savings.

An effective air barrier and insulation, SPF helps lower energy costs, keeping the interior temperature constant, and reducing the need for heat or air conditioning. Begley explains, ”I’m going to save thousands of dollars a year in electrical costs and natural gas costs because of the insulation.”

Truly a win-win. Green enough for California’s codes and for environmental champion, Ed Begley Jr; SPF is one celebrity trend we should all emulate.
