AM Construction Insulates Coastal Home on Seal Beach with Open-Cell and Closed-Cell Spray Foam
SEAL BEACH, CA–August 23, 2012–While it might be intuitive that heavily insulated homes are reserved for cold climate zones, AM Construction has provided an example of the contrary with a residential insulation project completed in sunny Southern California.
The company recently insulated an oceanside residence in Seal Beach, located just south of Long Beach in Greater Los Angeles. AM Construction was brought on board to insulate the home, which was a new construction located in a gated beachfront community.
"We did open-cell and closed-cell," said Akiva Sherman, owner of AM Construction. "The exterior walls were done with closed-cell foam because of the moisture. We did a lot of open-cell for a sound barrier."
The home was virtually inundated with foam. In addition to the walls, spray foam was applied to the underside of the floor decking in between the first and second stories, and even underneath the steps of the staircase. A thorough application like this requires a significant amount of material.
"We sprayed two sets of closed-cell and one and a half sets of open-cell," said Sherman, who added the foam was manufactured by Gaco Western.
Overspray was the major concern during the application. Sherman noted the extensive–and expensive–trim around the windows and doors (not to mention the doors themselves) that need to be covered up and masked off. Such precautions resulted in AM's crew of three needing about four days to complete the project.
