American WeatherStar Announces New Recipient of Their 2014 'Spotlight On Excellence' Program
MOBILE, AL – February 3, 2014 – American WeatherStar (AWS) is pleased to announce that Diversified Coatings is the first recipient of their 2014 "Spotlight On Excellence" for their work on a 20,000 sq. ft. Deck Coatings Project installed at the Carrollton Water Plant in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Last spring, AWS received a call from Roofing Solutions about an industrial deck coating opportunity in New Orleans. A major water treatment plant was under a complete renovation of all their facilities. Roofing Solutions' Tupcac Dela Cruz reached out to AWS to see if they had an appropriate system for such a project and a quality applicator that could handle the project.
After multiple site visits and discussion about the complexity of the project, Roofing Solutions chose Diversified Coatings from Fairhope, Alabama to install the deck coating system. Although pedestrian deck coatings are not an AWS core system, they were able to supply a system that met the job requirements.
The spec called for a 15-year warranty system using a polyurethane coating. The scope of work included tearing off the existing built-up roof and shot-blasting the concrete to ensure adhesion. Roofing Solutions handled the tear-off and shot-blasting, Diversified Coatings took it from there. With such an industrial environment and challenging jobsite conditions, the deck had to be pressure-washed several times before and during the application just to make sure the system adhered properly. Brandon White, Diversified's Project Manager, worked closely with Roofing Solutions and the Corp of Engineers dealing with not only job performance, but strict safety guidelines.
One coat of an epoxy primer was installed before a base coat, two intermediate coats, and a top coat of Aliphatic Polyurethane were applied within a 90-day window. The final coating included embedding granules to assist with system durability, as this is a heavy traffic area with, of all things, a working crane on the roof.
David Teufel, owner of Diversified Coatings, said it was definitely one of the most challenging projects he had ever worked on in 20 years in the construction industry. AWS appreciates the opportunity to work with unique projects that don't necessarily fall into the typical roof coatings industry.
