BASF® Sponsors "zero-energy" Classroom Using Spray Foam Insulation at Greenbuild International Conference and Expo

November 19, 2008 - WYANDOTTE, MI, – BASF, the world's largest chemical company, has joined Project FROG (Flexible Response to Ongoing Growth), a San Francisco-based design firm, and Honeywell International, Inc. to create a zero-energy classroom using the latest sustainable innovations in insulation and air barrier technologies. The project, which will debut at the U.S. Green Building Council's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo from Nov. 19-21, utilized BASF's premium spray polyurethane foams (SPF) to insulate both the wall, floor and roof assemblies along with Honeywell's Enovate® blowing agent resulting in superior energy efficiency, healthier indoor air and greater durability.

BASF Polyurethane Foam Enterprises LLC (BASF PFE), the world's leading producer of spray polyurethane foams, donated WALLTITE® insulating air barrier system for the wall assembly, ELASTOSPRAY® for the roof insulation and ELASTOCOAT™ for the roof coating.
"BASF PFE is demonstrating the advanced sustainable building technologies that are available today and provide school districts with affordable solutions to crippling energy costs," said Michael Sievers, BASF PFE Marketing Manager. "BASF closed-cell SPF technologies are state-of-the-art for the industry and have an R-value* of six, close to twice that of conventional insulation."

Both WALLTITE® and ELASTOSPRAY® products provide seamless monolithic construction with superior insulating capability with almost zero air infiltration that seals the building envelope. Structural strength adds to the durability of the walls and the roof in severe weather environments and the completely sealed building envelope allows for improved conditions to manage the indoor air quality. These are key design elements for any sustainable or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings, especially schools.

ELASTOCOAT™ elastomeric protective reflective coatings are spray applied, custom-engineered coatings designed to deliver superior durability, flexibility, waterproofing and severe weather resistance for SPF roofs.

As a sponsor of the "Frog Zero" Classroom, BASF joins other corporate sponsors in demonstrating the practical, cost-saving benefits of sustainable building. Other green and high-performance features of the classroom include maximum use of natural light; non-toxic floor and interior surfaces; and the use of photovoltaic roof panels.
