Bayer MaterialScience LLC Spray-Applied Polyurethane Foam Approved for Florida Residential Code Wind Uplift Requirements
SPRING, TX - April 25, 2012 - Hurricanes cause an estimated $10 billion in damages every year. Accordingly, the 2010 Florida residential building code requires strict performance standards for building products to endure high wind events. Bayseal closed cell (CC) spray?applied polyurethane foam (SPF) products Bayseal CC and Bayseal CC X from Bayer MaterialScience LLC recently received approval under the stringent Florida Building Code wind uplift requirements. As tested by an accredited third party laboratory, Bayseal CC and Bayseal CC X had a design uplift resistance of -190 pounds per square foot. This is the highest possible rated resistance by the test apparatus.
Bayseal CC and Bayseal CC X meet the Florida requirements when applied as only a fillet at the junction of the roof deck and along both sides of the roof rafter/truss top chords. Bayseal CC and Bayseal CC X SPF also qualify for homeowner insurance discounts, dependent on individual insurance company criteria and the building authority having local jurisdiction.
“It’s important to note that this approval for Bayseal closed cell SPF applies specifically to the roof assembly,” said Jose Luna, technology manager, Bayer MaterialScience LLC Spray Insulation and Roofing Materials. “Using Bayseal closed cell as insulation in the walls provides additional structural strength due to the monolithic sealing nature of the product. This sealing capability also helps reduce air leakage and makes homes more energy efficient. Bayseal closed cell SPF is also naturally resistant to water, reducing the risk of mold growth within the wall cavity as a result of moisture infiltration. Bayseal closed cell SPF is a highly effective product against the damaging impact of high winds and water on homes.”
Closed cell SPF is recognized by FEMA as a secondary water barrier for Gulf Coast construction per FEMA Technical Bulletin 2-08. A full International Code Council Evaluation Services (ICC-ES) report is available for Bayseal closed cell SPF at the link provided below.
