Covestro Marketing Manager Selected for Board of National Urban Sustainability Initiative
PITTSBURGH, PA – December 13, 2016 – Tim Thiel, an industrial marketing manager, Polyurethanes, Covestro LLC, is one of 13 individuals selected to serve on the inaugural Board of Governors of the 2030 Districts Network.
The Board will help standardize parameters and share best practices among urban building districts participating in the 2030 Challenge for Planning. The North American initiative supports local building industry leaders in dramatically reducing their energy and water consumption, and improving indoor air quality.
The goals of the 2030 Districts align well with Covestro's focus on promoting more sustainable building solutions through high-tech materials, such as energy-efficient polyurethane insulation and solvent-free coatings.
"Helping to build more sustainable communities is a priority for Covestro and an area of great interest to me personally," said Thiel, a 17-year veteran of Covestro, where he's responsible for industrial marketing and business development in a number of vertical markets including the building and construction industry. "I look forward to sharing my expertise with others as we advance the 2030 concept as a way for communities to address climate change and urban resiliency."
Currently operating in 15 cities, the goal of the 2030 Districts is to reduce energy and water use by 50 percent in existing buildings and to make new buildings carbon neutral by 2030. Education will play a critical role in achieving these goals, which is why the 2030 Districts Network will leverage its local chapters to educate property owners, institutional investors, managers, developers and others about how to improve building performance.

"Tim's involvement with the 2030 Districts dovetails well with our focus on developing materials that address the challenges of a growing global population and increasing urbanization," noted Jerry MacCleary, president of Covestro LLC. The overriding mission of the 2030 Districts Network is to onboard new cities to the District model, support peer exchange across Districts, confidentially store and share data, create national partnership relationships and influence national policy on energy efficiency, water use and transportation infrastructure.
Thiel also plays an active role collaborating with the Pittsburgh 2030 District, through the Green Building Alliance, and serves as liaison to 2030 District efforts in Dallas and San Antonio. The Pittsburgh native earned bachelors' and masters' degrees in accounting from Robert Morris University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He will be a part of the 2030 Districts Network Board for a designated term of three years.
