FLIR Unveils the First Personal Thermal Imaging Device for Consumers

WILSONVILLE, OR – January 10, 2014– FLIR Systems, Inc., the world leaders in thermal imaging technology, announces the launch of FLIR ONE™, the first personal thermal imaging device especially targeted at the consumer market. Unveiled at CES 2014 (Booth#20422), FLIR ONE places powerful thermal imaging technology in the hands of consumers, dramatically extending the limits of human vision and unlocking a full spectrum of practical applications.

As the first and only personal thermal imager for the consumer market under $350, FLIR ONE is compact, easy-to-use, compatible with the iPhone5 and 5s and fits on the phone like a protective case. Once mounted, the device displays a live thermal image of the world right on the phone's screen, giving users unprecedented ability to "see" in an array of conditions, including complete darkness. Originally developed for military night vision, this game- changing technology has revolutionized modern law enforcement, search and rescue, security, and surveillance. Now, consumers can apply the power of FLIR ONE to home improvement, outdoor recreation, security, safety, and much more.

"For decades, we've seen the possibilities of thermal imaging redefine industries that require critical awareness and heightened perception," said Andy Teich, President and CEO of FLIR. "With FLIR ONE, we're excited to extend this technology to everyday users to help them with home improvement, wildlife observation, safety, security, and to discover new ways to use thermal imaging."

FLIR ONE's unique ability to detect and visualize heat, including minute differences in temperature, gives consumers an innovative and versatile new tool that can be applied in various contexts, including:

Home Improvement: DIY homeowners and contractors can use this device to spot relative temperature differences at doors and windows to optimize energy efficiency, or to locate wall studs and ceiling joists.

Outdoor recreation: For birders and hunters, this device lets you observe wildlife, day or night, with a low intrusion level, while campers can use it to navigate in the dark, detect when the day's catch is fully cooked, or make sure a campfire is out.

Security and safety: This device can detect intruders in total darkness or help you find your way during a power outage.

With a worldwide rollout planned for spring 2014, the iPhone5 and 5s-compatible FLIR ONE will be available for under $350 in space grey, white or gold. FLIR ONE houses its own battery source that can power the device for two hours of continuous use and can boost iPhone5 and 5s battery life by up to 50 percent.

The reaction from people at the show on the first day was overwhelming, according to Teich.

"Our booth was packed from start to finish," said Teich.

The value to contractors that FLIR ONE provides in terms of time, effort, money is extremely obvious.

"This product allows contractors to show what's below the surface in a building.  Find energy loss problems and detect moisture problems.  It will also show a level of proficiency and differentiation for those who have it and understand it, versus those who do not," said Teich.

The FLIR ONE device is very to install on their phone, and the application is simple and intuitive to use.
"It's as easy to attach as a backup battery case. The application is incredibly simple and intuitive.  I've seen young children pick it up and capture images and send them to their friends in just seconds. The average user can attach the case and have it imaging in less than 30 seconds," said Teich.

Electrical and building contractors at CES who have tested the FLIR ONE are incredibly excited about the prospect of using this device on job sites.

"Every contractor we've shown it to thus far has said 'I want ONE,'" said Teich. "That said, I believe they'll see this as a competitive differentiator to win jobs and thus they may not want all of their competitors to have one as it will re-level the playing field," said Teich
