UNION CITY, IN – July 22, 2011 – Nestled in eastern Indiana, Airpro Spray Foam has been working in the spray foam industry since 2003. John Shockney, current owner of Airpro Spray Foam, talks with Sprayfoam.com about how he established his company.
“I was first introduced to insulation through my involvement in the Heating and Air Conditioning industry,” said Shockney. “I’ve been involved in HVAC since the 1980s.”
In 2002, Shockney purchased his current home with spray foam being the best way to insulate this old house (cup faced block built in 1914). He became very interested in the spray foam’s construction as well as its ability to make a home extremely energy efficient. Shockney’s interest motivated him to devote his time to researching spray foam and as a result, he started his own spray foam company. Shockney stated, “Not only was I interested in spray foam to insulate my existing house, but I also saw a great opportunity to get involved in the spray foam industry.”
A year later, in 2003, Shockney became certified and opened Airpro Spray Foam with his wife. “It’s a typical ‘Mom and Pop’ company,” said Shockney. “I work with my wife and two sons on the all the jobs we receive. I mostly do the spraying while the rest of my family assists me with setting up the job and taking down the equipment.”
For the last eight years, Shockney and his company have worked well and sprayed foam with great success. Shockney’s success can not only be attributed to excellent customer service, but also to his use of the Internet to advertise his company. The Internet helped Shockney reach out to clients not only in Indiana, but also in states all over the nation.
“We go wherever the work is,” said Shockney. “Where ever there is a job, whether it is in Indiana, or any where else in the United States, we are more than willing to work it.” According to Shockney, in the eight years his company has been in business, they have been all over the United States working on jobs in states including: Wisconsin and Louisiana. “The farthest we ever traveled was for a job in Inverness, FL,” said Shockney. “That job consisted of spraying a church with almost 15,000 pounds of foam. The guy who hired us for the job was the general contractor and a member of the church.”
According to Shockney, a majority of his clients are what he calls “do-it-yourself homeowners.” These are the homeowners who do all the remodeling and home improvements themselves. When the situation calls for spray foam, Shockney says that his company helps these DIY homeowners with spray foaming their walls, attics and crawl spaces.
“My company has found its niche with dealing with DIY homeowners,” said Shockney. “The homebuilders know what kind of spray foam job they want, but the cost for spray foaming a house can be too expensive. This is where ,my company comes in: we spray to the customer’s exact specification at an affordable price. They are a pleasure to work with.”
Traveling around the nation working on various spray jobs has its perks. Shockney shares a story of one of his company’s most interesting jobs.
In 2006, Airpro Spray Foam received a contract from a customer in Zainesville, OH.
“The client asked us to spray the 1,800 square foot roof of his soon-to-be underground home,” said Shockney. “The house was situated on the side of the hill. About 75% of the home was embedded into the hill. We went in, and after a day of working, successfully sprayed the roof of the home.”
The owner told Shockney that he wanted to build a home underground to make it much more energy efficient. It is widely known throughout the Midwest that the dirt maintains a temperature of about 57 degrees year round. With the house completely underground, the temperature can be maintained at a very comfortable level.
In terms for the future, Shockney and his company hopes to continue their services. “ We are always looking to solve new problems for diverse projects,” he concluded.
