Nationwide Overspray Heralds Necessity of Contingency Planning for SPF Industry

DALLAS, TX - March 9, 2012 - Imagine you’re outside spraying foam, just looking to wrap up an SPF roofing project. It’s a windy day and although you’ve accounted for that fact, the cars in the parking lot near the spray site still wind up getting coated with particles of spray foam. The owners are perturbed, to say the least, and you know this is going to cost you.

Incidents like this occur all the time, but the fact remains: how do you respond? Is it even feasible to pay out of pocket? Is litigation a possibility? What about negative publicity? The answer lies in being proactive instead of reactive, in planning instead of responding.

When it comes to spray applications, the likelihood of overspray comes with the territory, and spray foam application is no exception.

“After attending the SPFA Convention in Dallas this past January, I was struck by the constant refrain from contractors that accidental overspray is way too common on a project,” said Bryan Lochead, Compliance Manager at Nationwide Overspray.

Regardless of the precautions taken when performing an SPF application, overspray will happen. It’s not a matter of if, but when. So, the overspray paradigm must shift from well-intended, but futile, precautions to proper contingency planning.

“It’s a necessary cost of doing business,” Lochead said. “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”

He suggests committing to a written plan that outlines a timetable and cost estimate for cleanup and repairs. Such a contingency plan not only makes cleanup more timely, but reduces overall operating costs as well. Furthermore, a contingency plan can mitigate potential public relations fallout stemming from an incident.

“A contingency plan keeps the company focus where it should be, which is completing the project on time,” said Lochead.

The process for contingency planning doesn’t need to be difficult. Lochead suggests developing a relationship with an experienced overspray removal company, such as Nationwide Overspray, that has a track record of handling large claims. These companies specialize in handling all aspects of a claim:

  • Liability determination
  • Pre-cleaning inspections
  • Mobile on-site capability
  • Customer service expertise
  • Liability release process

When vetting overspray removal companies, it’s critical to get briefed on their pricing structure and step-by-step claim handling process. Also, it’s important to ask questions like the following:

  • When does the cleaning team arrive?
  • What is the process for removing overspray?
  • How long will it take?
  • Where will the cleaning take place?
  • What are my costs going to be?
  • Is there a guarantee?

“The beauty of a contingency plan is that is costs nothing to have and results in limiting losses,” Lochead summarized. “A well-thought-out contingency plan is a thing of beauty.”
