Shingle manufacture warranty concerns
well i had one of the local code officials tell me that "we were concerned about you voiding the warranty on the shingles by spraying to the roof sheeting from below"...
i asked him when was the local code concerned or given jurisdiction over product warranty issues?
i did remind him of the elk study...and that just last year we recieved approval over the "upper end" architectural shingles from certainteed (general contractor got the approval,,damn i wish i had it in writeing)...
then this weekend i gots to thinking(oh boy,,this oughta be good)...
do the shingle manufacturers (read: same corporate entity as the glass manufacturers)have a study that shows foam adversly affects the shingles above or is it just some wingtip types pulling it out of their rectums to save their market share???is it based on science or speculation,???? what the heck do you think they would say???

???how are you other guy's addressing this issue for the conditioned space attic appllications?

I use demilec so I show them the letter from elk stating that the use of foam on the roof deck will not void the warranty. And that if you can contact their shingle manufacturer you might be able to get the same guarantee. The builders seem to think that the foam will push heat back on the roof thus shortening their life. But what about the radiant barrier sheeting? That stuff is definitely reflecting heat back on the shingles and nobody seems to think about that.

Certainteed just came on board and allow their shingles to be used in "hot roof" situations without affecting their warranties.

According to recent testing, the difference in surface temperature between a "hot roof" (unvented) and cold roof (ventilated) is 9° F. Nine degrees. The vast majority of heat gain is from radiation anyway, and ventilation makes no difference in radiation.
