spraying foundation walls
Should the foam be coated with a tar-like product if spraying the exterior side of a basement wall, or is it ok to just spray foam and backfill?

That depends on where you are and how low the water table is. Studies performed in Canada on insulation on foundation walls demonstrated that 2 lb density SPF installed the exterior of block walls without any coating did not absorb water. However, if you are down in Louisiana or Houston, a water proofing coating such as asphalt would be recommended.
