Aging Geodesic Dome Exterior Retrofitted by Smart Choice Insulation & Roofing

OREGON CITY, OR – October 2, 2012 – Geodesic dome houses, which became popular in the 70s, are not only unique looking (think Epcot), but may also offer the key to increased energy efficiency and protection from the elements. Smart Choice Insulation & Roofing, Inc. recently retrofitted the exterior of an aging geodesic dome with spray foam.

The two-story domed residence was built in the 70's and is located in a rural area outside of Portland, Oregon. According to George MacDonald, Director of Operations at Smart Choice, spray foam was chosen because the owner's biggest concern was making the home watertight and ensuring it lasts forever.

The existing structure had a conventional shingle roof. Before spray foam application could take place, another contractor was brought in to tackle most of the prep work, tearing off sheet metal and replacing rotted wood.

MacDonald said it is difficult to sheet domes with conventional roofing products. "Foam is monolithic, it is seamless and provides extra insulation that they can't stuff into all the angles with fiberglass," he said.

Spray foam is also resistant to snow, mold, and mildew and adds stability to a home. MacDonald added that spray foam is the only FEMA-approved roofing system.

After preparation was completed, Smart Choice sprayed 1.5 inches of Ultra-Thane 230 3 lb. closed-cell foam and 30 mils of Ultra-Tough 2500 coating, both materials made by General Coatings. The roof was finished with a tan acrylic topcoat with Monterey sand broadcast in the final coat.

One of the many obstacles crewmembers faced, according to MacDonald, were heavy dews Oregon experiences this time of year resulting from cooler evening temperatures. "Surfaces cool off fast and condensate, so it takes longer to dry them in the morning and you have a narrower window of time during the day," he said.

Crewmembers employed several ladders and set up scaffolding pieces. There were trees in the way and walkways, trucks, balconies, porches, and protruding dormers to work around. For protection, the workers used safety lines, which were attached to an anchor screwed into the top of the roof. It took three crewmembers about a week to finish the job.

MacDonald mentioned that this was one of the most difficult projects he did this year. "It was a small job, but a tough one," he said.

"It was nice to actually perform a service for a customer and walk away knowing it's going to last a long, long time and the results are immediate. It makes the comfort of the home fantastic."
