Company Spreads Spray Foam Gospel in South Florida
NORTH PALM BEACH, FL - February 14, 2012 - There is no shortage of spray foam fervor at Therma Seal Insulation Systems. The company, which employs a dozen people and is based in North Palm Beach, contracts on spray foam insulation projects throughout South Florida, with about half of the company’s business coming solely from Palm Beach County.
For both commercial and residential applications, Therma Seal utilizes Icynene foam to facilitate a building’s energy efficiency rating, especially for LEED certification. The company is about to start a commercial application for a building slated for Platinum LEED certification in Miami-Dade County.
On the residential front, most applications undertaken by Therma Seal tend to be higher-end construction projects. A major reason behind this has to do with the slow-down in the construction industry as a whole.
“There’s not a whole lot of activity on the moderate scale going on,” said Jim Finck, Therma Seal’s president.
Another factor contributing to the disparity in residential applications is the perception of spray foam insulation being expensive and thus out of the budget for mid-level construction. Finck avidly disputes this notion.
While he admits the up-front cost looks more expensive on paper, Finck lays out a more realistic account: since construction projects are pretty much always financed, the expense should be considered over a longer period of time rather than up front. What should be included in cost comparisons, Finck argues, is the immediate, ongoing savings of a spray foam insulation system versus standard fiberglass insulation.
“Let’s play the cards out: you might be adding an extra thirty dollars per month in financing, but saving two hundred dollars on your energy bill every month,” Finck said, to illustrate his point.
In addition to the ongoing savings, Finck also stresses the significance of spray foam’s role in creating an unvented attic system. Such a system reduces the ability of high winds to build pressure under a roof, which can lead to damage or complete removal.
Preventative measures against structural damage facilitate savings in the long run, especially in a hurricane-prone area like South Florida. Beyond financial and structural benefits, Finck touts spray foam insulation’s advantages as a barrier for air infiltration, allergens and noise pollution, thus improving the overall comfort for occupants.
“It’s really about smart-building,” Finck summarized.
