DC315 Offers A Tested Solution for Class III Vapor Retarder Over Open-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam
IRVINE, CA – June 6, 2014 – DC315 ran third party testing to validate the use of DC315 and Sherwin Williams ProMar 200 ZERO VOC, Interior latex EG-shell B20WO2651 coating as a solution for the requirement of a vapor retarder over open-cell spray polyurethane foam in certain applications.
The testing is being driven by a new code requirement. (See 2012 IRC, Section R806.5 Item 4.) This requires a Class III vapor retarder coating over the open-cell spray foam. The code states that a topcoat of latex or enamel paint can be used (See Section R702.7.2). In many of the assemblies, there is a requirement to meet AC377 Appendix X for an Ignition Barrier.
IFTI ran a series of tests at QAI in Rancho Cucamonga to validate that DC315 is not affected by a topcoat, and to meet the 2012 IRC, Section R806.5 Item 4. Three specimens were tested to ASTM E84 standards to measure Flame Spread and Smoke Index performance. This testing proves that DC315, when coated with a top coat, performs better than the baseline SPF and has no adverse
effect to performance.
"We were shocked how many contractors called and asked us if we can qualify for the vapor retarder need," stated Gary Wolfe, Executive Vice President of IFTI. "I was more shocked how many other coating companies were telling their contractors they were, yet they had no testing! Our motto says it all, 'the proof is in the testing.'"
Simply stated, IFTI believes it has shown:
- DC315 and ProMar 200, when used together, satisfy the requirements of 2012 IRC, Section R806.5 as a Class III vapor retardant assembly.
- DC315, when top-coated with an Acrylic Latex Water-Based coating, performance is not compromised.
Specimen 1: SPF with no coating – SPF qualified with a Class A rating. Specimen 2: SPF with 20 Mils WFT DC315 coated with 6 Mils WFT ProMar 200 Zero VOC top coat - SPF tested with better numbers than base line and qualified with a Class A rating. Specimen 3: SPF with 4 Mils WFT DC315 coated with 6 Mils WFT ProMar 200 Zero VOC top coat – SPF tested with better numbers than base line and qualified with a Class A rating. ProMar 200 ZERO VOC, Interior latex EG-shell b20wo2651 coating from Sherwin Williams is listed with a PERM Rating of 8.5 qualifying it as a Class III Vapor Retarder.
Other notable attributes of ProMar 200 Zero VOC:
- Zero VOCs meets the most stringent environments. Complies with LEED, MPI, GREENGUARD, Environmental Institute (GEI) and other green guidelines and regulations.
- Anti-microbial agents inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface.
- Outstanding touch-up reduces repaint costs.
- Exceptional durability, easy application, and excellent hide.
