Experts Recommend Spray Foam for Crawlspaces

With the seasons changing and temperatures on the rise, homeowners across the U.S. are continuing to fix damage done to their homes from the winter months. According to a report published several weeks ago, homeowners can cut utility costs and boost their homes' energy efficiency by using DIY home insulation foam to fill in cracks and leaks. 

According to the Scripps Howard News Service, one area of a home that is sometimes neglected during renovations is the attic, particularly the crawl spaces. Analysts assert that the leaks and cracks in a house's frame, along with those in the foundation and around doors and windows, can allow cold and hot air to leak, resulting in higher energy bills.

As a result, many contractors are increasingly using DIY home insulation foam to fill in those spaces. Many industry watchers recommend insulating the rim joist cavities of a crawlspace foundation to provide a thermal barrier against external forces. Rim joists are above the outside grade level and are exposed to cold weather; if condensation occurs because of the cold, mold and decay can form.

To ensure mold and mildew don't form, experts advise homeowners to use DIY home insulation foam to the rim joists. While spray foam is slightly more expensive than other insulation tools, it saves money in the long-term.
