New York City Contractor Cools Off Fresh Fruits and Veggies With Spray Foam

NEW YORK, NY - November 16, 2011 - Last week, Borbey Contractors, Inc. finished up a massive spray foam job that will help healthy eaters all over New York City enjoy the freshest fruits and vegetables possible.

Katzman Produce, a fresh produce company operating out of the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, enlisted Borbey to insulate three refrigeration units where the company keeps stock. The project totaled in 105,267 board feet of substrate.

“[Prior to the project] utility costs were high, and they came to us looking for the best solution for energy savings,” explained Livia Pinilla, co-owner of Borbey Contractors. Katzman Produce expressed interest in spray foam insulation due to its reputation as a top choice for green building.

A team of 5-6 applicators spent a month and a half on the space. They sprayed three inches of Premium Spray Products, Inc. Foamsulate™ 210 closed-cell spray foam throughout. 

Frank Borbely, Pinilla’s business partner and co-owner of Borbey Contractors, said that spray foam was the ideal product to meet all of Katzman Produce’s needs. He cited cleanliness, energy efficiency, moisture blocking, and structural durability as other factors the company requested.

“They didn’t want anything that would build up residue, dust or mildew over time,” said Borbely. “When you’re dealing with fresh fruits and vegetables the environment needs to be clean and sanitary.”

Pinilla also mentioned that the project is eligible for large rebates from Consolidated Edison, Inc., one of the largest energy companies in the United States. In line with a booming national trend, ConEd is offering substantial rebates for industrial projects that focus on increasing energy efficiency.

Pinilla said that Borbey Contractors added spray foam insulation to their long list of building services to align with the worldwide push towards energy efficiency. “Going green was the best thing for the environment, and also the best thing for our business,” she said.
