New York Spray Foam Sees Increase In Demand For Closed-Cell Spray Foam In Hurricane Sandy Aftermath
LONG ISLAND, NY – November 16, 2012 – In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, spray foam contractors in the Northeast, like New York Spray Foam, are continuing to see closed-cell spray foam get the notoriety it once only received from hurricane-prone areas like the Southeast.
Marty Ciesinski, Owner of New York Spray Foam, first began his spray foam business about eight years ago after building a house for a friend in the Hamptons. The homeowner had another home insulated with spray foam in Florida, where the product had already become popular, and wanted to apply spray foam to the Hamptons residence as well.
"It really wasn't available here in New York," said Ciesinski. "So when he mentioned it to me, we started to investigate it together and said, 'Wow, this is an amazing product' and wound up starting a business together to do this."
New York Spray Foam now has six crewmembers and does mostly closed-cell applications for renovations, new construction, residential, and some commercial projects.
The company has received numerous calls about closed-cell spray foam since Hurricane Sandy from both new and existing customers. "We got calls from two customers we worked with last year in Amityville and Babylon," said Ciesinski. At that time, New York Spray Foam worked on parts of the customers' homes that were damaged during Hurricane Irene in 2011. During those renovations, the company applied three inches of NCFI's 2 lb. InsulStar closed-cell spray foam to the walls and crawlspaces of the homes. One home's kitchen was insulated and the other had insulation applied to its extension.
The areas of the homes New York Spray Foam renovated in 2011 were the only portions that survived Hurricane Sandy. "This storm had a much greater storm surge than Irene and the rest of the house got destroyed," said Ciesinski. "But what we did, lo and behold, stayed. Everything was wiped out except for these rooms as a result of the closed-cell foam that protected the structure."
Ciesinski said he has known since the start of his business that closed-cell is the dominant spray foam product. "We tried to tell customers it's a FEMA-rated product, hurricane-resistant. They understood, but maybe didn't get it for those benefits," he said. "Once the storm hit, everyone was like 'wow look at this product!'"
News about spray foam success stories like this one is spreading by word of mouth, according to Ciesinski. He said customers are telling their neighbors, who are now also inquiring about closed-cell spray foam for their own homes.
"It's nice to see the benefits of the product come to the forefront, and people are getting to see that now," Ciesinski added.
