South Texas Insulation Tackles Recovery Project at Hornsby Bend Waste Water Treatment Facility

SAN ANTONIO, TX – July 17, 2012 – South Texas Insulation just finished spraying its third tank cover at the Hornsby Bend Waste Water Treatment Facility in Austin. The project, which began last summer, is nowhere near completion.

“This is an on-going project that’s going to last another couple of years, maybe two, depending on how fast they pull the tanks out,” said Ki Shin, Vice President at South Texas Insulation.

The Hornsby Bend Waste Water Treatment Facility is being completely rehabbed and recovered through federal funding of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. As each sludge-filled digester tank is pulled from the ground, it is rehabbed or replaced, and then made ready for South Texas insulation. There are seven tanks in all.

“We spray the tank covers with foam, and coat them too,” said Shin. “Once we’re done with them, they’re basically in service. We’re the last guys to work on the them (tanks).”

“The 3-6 person crew sprays each cover, which are 118 feet in diameter, with 12 sets of 3 lb. Gaco Western Foam,” said Shin. “They then coat the tank covers with Gaco’s G20 Silicone sealant.”

“It has been a real challenge because of the weather,” said Shin. “The wind makes it hard to spray in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. We try to make it look at least half way smooth but we struggle with the overspray.”

It takes South Texas Insulation 2-3 months to complete a tank cover. When they finish, they head home to San Antonio and wait for word that the next tank cover is ready to be sprayed. Then they hit the road again, traveling 80 miles north to the job site where they work for another 2 or 3 months. This pattern of spraying and waiting, for each of the seven covers, is the reason the project has been estimated to last another year and a half. Shin says the team is 99% done with their third cover, just under the half way mark.
