20 min thermal barrier
Manson,

I am working on a project and the fire marshall is saying that I need a 20 min thermal barrier. The project is in Michigan and the foam in question is sprayed above a drop ceiling. What is code in this situation? Its 2 lb foam that is sprayed at about 1 inch thick.

He is also saying that the foam has a 0.3 second to ignition time. I for the life of me cannot figure out where he gets that number. For the record the foam has an ES report and is from a well know supplier.

thoughts,

lk

Ask the fire marshal for his documentation of this requirement and data. Perhaps it is something from a seminar he attended or a NFPA document. There is nothing in the ICC code referencing a 20 minute thermal barrier over foam plastics and I don't know the source of his .03 second ignition number either.

Thanks Mason.

I have requested more information and I will let you know what I come up with.
