Adding Humidifiers
I'm looking at a house (15,000sf +) where the owner wants foam insulation but for some reason has decided to install some humidifiers along with the hvac. They aren't really convinced to drop the tons of air because of the foam but have dropped it some due to the seer. What type of problems could they face if they stick with installing foam and humidifiers? Could they install both and but in an ERV/HRV to help reduce moisture problems or will they even face any? We are talking about Somerset, KY.

humidifier should not be a problem if correctly regulated and set to operate at "normal" humidity's for interiors... erv/hrv is a must with any foam sealed home..(imo)...we have a few homes that are blower door testing 4 times under similar filterglass homes...this with just 1" closed cell building envelope and a bibbs glass system over the top.. talk about "build tight..ventilate right..manage the indoor air quality"...hotdamn... remember..insulation=the isolation of one environment from another environment... we caulk any joined timbers, top plate, bottom plate, foam the winders and doors,,,this makes a huge difference...(this is offered as an option for those who really know and/or care about maximal thermal performance of their structure). gotta go get some foam on the walls.. |

Amen to the HRV. A tight home will have more than enough humidity, especially in the winter. HRV will extract the humidity from the heat. "Just foam it." |
