Posted: Mar 05, 2007 09:59 PM	Hello, When you say it is covered with ballast... Is this ballast imbedded into hot asphalt (built-up roof)? What size is the ballast (1/2' or.. ballast could be interpretted in numerous sizes)? Or is it a single ply roof, with the ballast loose laid? SPF is not for every roof but should be considered in all cases. SPF will provide added wind protection, energy savings, etc. Could also be beneficial where access is an issue, or if removing the existing roof will create a disturbance, etc. SPF will outlast any built up roof out there, with the proper maintenence. There is no more maintenence with SPF than with built-up, it will just last longer. Built-up eventually dries out and gets brittle in 20 years or so. SPF, 20 years later will still funtion as it did when applicated. The key is re-coating every 10 years or so. The cost for re-coating is minimal and is far cheaper than built-up over the long haul. Gregory Gibbs Posted: Mar 06, 2007 07:36 AM	Original roof system starting with the metal decking is as follows 2" fiberglass insulation covered with a six ply built up with .250 pea gravel imbedded,on top of that is 2" of styrofoam insulation then a .060 manville rubber membrane with 1" to 1.5" rock ballast this system is approching thirty years old and to add injury to insult the rubber roof system was not installed properly from day one, from what I've been told the roof has always leaked I know the the fiberglass and the styrofoam are wet. try finding leaks with this set up. thanks for the reply
