Walk in Box anyone.....
Our family business has entered a new area and we need a cold storage unit in our warehouse. Since buying a unit to cover the square footage would cost roughly 15 to 20 thousand dollars and our innitial start up capital is no where near that amount we decided to go ahead and build one ourselves. (The amount of cursing I did when I found this Q&A site after we built the unit may win me a ticket straight to hell but its ok) So, my friend and I framed a room roughly 33 feet back by 21 feet wide (With an 8 foot door on one of the longer sides) We used standard 12 foot 2x4's and sheathed the outside of the box with 7/16th inch OSB board. My limited understanding of spray foam leads me to believe that I need a 2lb (1.8lb) Closed Cell polyurethane at a fill of roughly the full 2x4. And from reading another forum question, I should stear clear of Icynen? We will then put the inside layer of OSB boards and then paint the inside with multiple layers of epoxy. Lots of questions though... Will this even work? Has this been done before? What problems did you or people you know experience? Anyone want to come to new york to help or at least help me get completely drunk after I realize I wasted too much time and money? I figure it is as easy of a job as anything, I mean four walls, inside a warehouse. and lastly, If I am completely off about any of this stuff, let me know if you can. Ok guys, your the experts, if you have a theory or idea let me know. Thanks for the help. Sincerely, Kenneth |

Cold storage work is a highly technical application and should only be done by experienced professionals. Having said that, your design is missing a key element, vapor barrier. You need to install a vapor barrier to the warm side of the wall, ceiling and floor before installing the insulation. You don't mention the temperature of the box but it is important to have the right size cooling equipment for the box and the right amount of insulation. If it is a freezer, you need to not only insulate the floor but to heat the floor area around the freezer doors to prevent ice building up. Check out SPFA's technical document AY 111 Guideline to Cold Storage Applications Using SPF and get an cold storage expert involved to assist. |
