The main reason is that your supplier should know how best to use the material they sell to you in a variety of conditions. Plus, once you ask them about how to install something, prepare a substrate, etc, they assume some legal responsibility for the application. (assuming you installed it according to their recommendations). I also recommend using ASTM standards and/or industry guidelines and standards whenever possible. These standards are typically written to be conservative, following them should not get you in trouble. And if something strange happens, again this limits your liability.
