In the heart of South Florida, classrooms sit silently devoid of students, but that’s all by design. Students are getting out of class and into the field, ditching pens and paper for hardhats and work boots–all in the name of building energy-efficient homes and bettering local communities. Atlantic Community High School, located in Delray Beach, operates a real world experiential learning program called the Eagle’s Nest Construction Academy.
Deriving its name from the school’s mascot, the Eagles, the program seeks to better prepare students for entering the job market in the construction industry, be that directly out of high school or after college. While a completed home is the goal of the program, the real value for the students is in the process.
